The UPSC CSAT syllabus is divided under the following sections
The UPSC Civil Services Aptitude Test (CSAT) is of Qualifing nature required candidates to secure atleast 33% of questions out of 80 questions.Each question carries 2.5 marks with negative marking.In 2014, The UPSC annoucden that CSAT would be a Qualifing paper with 33% of questions effective from 2015. The CSAT Score will not be counted for overall Prelims Ranking
The UPSC assesses the candidate's understanding, analytical skills, and time management to qualify the paper. The syllabus for CSAT is referred to under the Prelims syllabus segment. Over the last 10 years, observations at the distribution of question patterns reveal the following: the major questions are being asked across the three sections of the syllabus - Comprehension, Reasoning, and Basic Mathematics and Numeracy.
The Reading Comprehension section is not just about reading skills only, but it requires more critical thinking and understanding levels of the given passage. The questions on the passage require more understanding of logical references, critical thinking and valid explaination, which are essential to get more marks. The themes of the passages in the section cover more diversed topic including Religious, S&T, Rnvironment, International relations, LAW and Philosophy etc...
The Reasoning section in the paper plays a crucial role in evaluating the candidate's logical and analytical thinking capabilities. This part includes more diverse subjects like Calendar, Clocks, Series, Directions, Coding-Decoding, Blood Relations, as well as Cubes and Dice, and Non-Verbal Reasoning. It assesses the candidate's reasoning proficiency, ranging from basic to complex, and involves critical reasoning to arrive at the answers.
The Mathematics and Numeracy section of the CSAT Paper has emerged as a significant factor in deciding the candidate's score of marks in the segment. The concepts of geometry, mensuration, set theory, and Venn diagrams, data interpretation, time and speed, time and work, pipes and ages, averages, profits and loss accounts, percentages, interest, and ratio, proportion, and mixture allegation are of varying difficulty and range from straightforward solutions to complex problems that require more understanding and practice.
